Itinerary Details

Arriving at Paro International Airport offers breathtaking views over the snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas spanning Bhutan, Nepal, and Sikkim. Upon clearing immigration, your local guide and driver greet you for a short drive into Paro town where lunch or light refreshments await.

Start your Bhutan experience with a visit to Rinpung Dzong, a stately fortress adorned with traditional Bhutanese art. Just above lies the National Museum housed in a former watchtower, offering a rich curation of Bhutanese relics and crafts.

The journey continues with a scenic drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. On holidays, roadside archery contests are common—feel free to stop and watch this favorite local sport. Upon arrival, settle into the Le Meridien Hotel and enjoy dinner at its multi-cuisine restaurant. Additional hotel amenities include a fitness center, steam room, sauna, and indoor pool.

After breakfast, you’ll be guided to Tashichho Dzong, home to the royal offices and the central monastic body. The highlight is the vibrant Tshechu festival in the outer courtyard, where sacred dances, known as Cham, are performed in traditional masks and costumes.

Locals dressed in their finest ghos and kiras gather for blessings and merriment. Watch performances and learn their meanings from your guide. Don’t be surprised if the comedic Atsaras (masked clowns) engage you—it’s all part of the festive spirit.

The evening stroll through town reveals celebratory events in the main square and bustling market areas.

Places: Buddha Dordenma, Memorial Chorten, Farmers Market

This day explores Thimphu’s contrasting tapestry of ancient traditions and contemporary life. Begin with panoramic views from the Buddha Dordenma, a massive bronze statue that dominates the skyline. Follow it up with a short scenic walk nearby.

Continue to the Memorial Chorten, a popular pilgrimage site for locals who circle the stupa in prayer. Visit the Centenary Farmers Market next to mingle with farmers selling organic produce—great for local snacks and cultural interaction.

Optional: Rest at your hotel or explore additional temples and craft bazaars at your own pace.

Route: Thimphu → Dochula Pass → Punakha → Gangtey

A long but enriching drive awaits. Begin with a stop at Dochula Pass at 3,150 meters—lined with 108 memorial stupas and offering Himalayan Mountain vistas.

Descend into Punakha Valley for lunch in Lobesa town, then take a short walk to Chimi Lhakhang, known as the Fertility Temple. This site is connected with the eccentric saint Lama Drukpa Kunley, famed for his unorthodox spiritual methods.

Continue into the high-altitude glacial expanse of Gangtey and Phobjikha valleys. Check into the Aman Kora Lodge, a luxury retreat styled after a traditional fortress and tailored for comfort after a day on the road.

Explore the serene landscapes of Gangtey—home to the endangered Black-Necked Cranes during winter months.

Take short nature walks, including the Gangtey Nature Trail through pine forests. Visit Gangtey Goemba, a prominent monastery in the region, and optionally consult the resident astrologer.

Consider lunch as a picnic surrounded by open meadows or return to the lodge for dining.

Engage with locals via village walks and farmhouse visits for insight into life in one of Bhutan’s most peaceful regions.

Sites: Punakha Dzong, Iron Suspension Bridge

Drive back to Punakha and Wangdue valleys. Your stay at Uma by COMO promises a relaxing ambiance with valley views.

Visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s former capital fortress, built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Despite past natural disasters, the Dzong retains its intricate woodwork and massive architecture.

Nearby, cross Bhutan’s longest iron suspension bridge, continuing along scenic roads through rice paddies and flower-lined pathways.

Hike through the forest to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, offering elevated views of Punakha Valley and a peaceful atmosphere.

Cross the Punatsangchhu River via suspension bridge and visit Sangchen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery, where residents are open to sharing insights into their daily routines and spiritual studies.

Optionally, travel to Talo and Nobgang, ancestral homes of Bhutan’s Queen Mothers. These villages provide excellent walkways through orchards and traditional homes, great for experiencing rural life.

  • Stop at Semtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s first fortress built in 1629, and Tachogang Temple, accessible via an ancient iron bridge.

In Paro, check into the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary, a wellness-centered resort featuring pottery classes, cooking demonstrations, traditional healing consultations, massage therapy, and yoga. Customize your stay to recharge before departure.

No Bhutan journey is complete without a trek to Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Located 900 meters above the valley floor, this sacred site clings to a cliff edge. The round-trip hike takes about five hours. Midway, stop at the cafeteria or enjoy a packed lunch.

Upon return, you may relax at the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary or continue local sightseeing in Paro, browsing handicraft shops and sacred temples.
