Off the Trail
This portion of the journey offers an immersive high-altitude trekking experience through remote valleys, alpine meadows, and spectacular mountain passes.
Begin with a drive to the trailhead, followed by a challenging trek through forests of conifer and rhododendron. The trail runs along the Paro Chhu River, requiring several river crossings and rock scrambles. Camp in a cedar grove near a Bhutanese house.
Follow the widening Paro Chhu valley to alpine meadows. Along the way, pass an army outpost and yak herder villages—Soe, Takethang, and Dangochang. Enjoy views of Mount Jomolhari if the weather permits.
Camp Altitude: 4,080 m
Use this day for high-altitude acclimatization. Suggested activities include:
Cross the Paro Chhu and climb switchbacks with views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tserim Kang. Visit twin lakes at Tshophu, then ascend Bhonte La pass (4,890 m), the highest point of your trek. Descend to the Soi Yaksa Valley, a serene campsite dotted with nomadic settlements.
Climb above tree line through forests and alpine scrub. Pass through a meadow with a mani wall and stream before ascending Tahung La (4,500 m). From this high vantage point, look west toward Kanchenjunga. Continue to Thombu Shong, a grassy yak pasture with herder huts.
A steep final ascent over Thombu La (4,380 m) followed by a dramatic descent through forests and wildflower meadows. Traverse down to Gunitsawa helipad and cross the river to Sharna Zampa—the trailhead where your journey began.
