Itinerary Details

  • Airport Reception
    Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by your local guide and driver.
  • Hotel Check-in
    Time to settle into your accommodations before beginning your exploration.
  • Rinpung Dzong Visit
    This fortress, meaning “Heaped Jewels,” is a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture and serves both as a monastery and an administrative center.
  • National Museum
    Situated above Rinpung Dzong, this museum housed in the Ta Dzong (a former watchtower) offers insight into Bhutan’s rich heritage through artifacts, thangka paintings, and ancient weaponry.
  • Evening Farmhouse Experience
    Visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse featuring:
  • Livestock and rustic living quarters
    Enjoy a hot stone bath, learn Bhutanese cooking, and dine with the host family in traditional style
  • Taktsang Excursion
    Embark on a rigorous but rewarding hike to Bhutan’s most sacred site:
    • Roughly three hours uphill, two hours down
    • Elevation gain of approximately 900 meters
    • Midway cafeteria offers refreshments and panoramic views
  • Historical and Spiritual Significance
    Taktsang was founded in the eighth century by Guru Padmasambhava, who is believed to have arrived at the site on the back of a flying tigress. It is revered as a place of meditation and spiritual power.
  • Kyichu Lhakhang
    Before returning to your hotel, visit one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, built in the seventh century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo.

    Evening stroll through the Paro Valley or quiet time at your hotel.

This portion of the journey offers an immersive high-altitude trekking experience through remote valleys, alpine meadows, and spectacular mountain passes.

Begin with a drive to the trailhead, followed by a challenging trek through forests of conifer and rhododendron. The trail runs along the Paro Chhu River, requiring several river crossings and rock scrambles. Camp in a cedar grove near a Bhutanese house.

  • Camp Altitude: 4,080 m

Follow the widening Paro Chhu valley to alpine meadows. Along the way, pass an army outpost and yak herder villages—Soe, Takethang, and Dangochang. Enjoy views of Mount Jomolhari if the weather permits.

Use this day for high-altitude acclimatization. Suggested activities include:

  • Day hikes to lakes and glaciers near Jomolhari and Jichu Drake
  • Wildlife viewing (possible sightings include blue sheep)
  • Visit nearby high-altitude settlements for cultural interaction
  • Distance: 16 km
  • Duration: 6–7 hours
  • Elevation: +810 m / -1,090 m
  • Camp Altitude: 3,800 m

Cross the Paro Chhu and climb switchbacks with views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tserim Kang. Visit twin lakes at Tshophu, then ascend Bhonte La pass (4,890 m), the highest point of your trek. Descend to the Soi Yaksa Valley, a serene campsite dotted with nomadic settlements.

  • Duration: 4–5 hours
  • Elevation: +720 m / -340 m
  • Camp Altitude: 4,180 m

Climb above tree line through forests and alpine scrub. Pass through a meadow with a mani wall and stream before ascending Tahung La (4,500 m). From this high vantage point, look west toward Kanchenjunga. Continue to Thombu Shong, a grassy yak pasture with herder huts.

  • Duration: 4–5 hours
  • Elevation: +200 m / -1,650 m

A steep final ascent over Thombu La (4,380 m) followed by a dramatic descent through forests and wildflower meadows. Traverse down to Gunitsawa helipad and cross the river to Sharna Zampa—the trailhead where your journey began.

Meet your driver for transfer back to your hotel in Paro.

After breakfast, your LA guide and driver will escort you to Paro International Airport for departure.
